August 9th 2008
Itasca County Minnesota
A moderately strong solar wind causes an outburst of auroras the night of August 9th as seen from Grand Rapids, MN.
View looking to the northeast from about 10 miles south of Grand Rapids, MN.
Looking pretty much straight north.  Note the big dipper and  what must have been a Perseid meteor.
Have to do one of these per year.  It's a lot easier when is isn't -25 degrees out.
Another faint Perseid off to the lower left of the photo.  Looking northwest towards Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Looking northwest towards Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Looking northeast.
I kept thinking about how this looking like some  type of a radioactive shelf cloud with its multi-tiered appearance.
A last look to the north/northwest at about 1am to end the night.
